Major and Minors


The Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies program offers a major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, a minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and a minor in US Latinx Studies.

  • Introductory course: (one of the following) 
    • LACS 101, LACS_OX 101, HIST 211, SPAN 212, or PORT 212
  • Language Requirement: (three courses from following)
    • SPAN 300; SPAN 301; SPAN 302; SPAN 305; SPAN 309, or
    • PORT 110; PORT 201; PORT 202
      • Courses fulfilling the language requirement may have additional prerequisites or require a placement test. Please see the course descriptions prior to enrolling.
  • History Requirement (three courses from following)
    • HIST 360; HIST 361; HIST 362; HIST 363; HIST 368
  • Five courses on Latin American and Caribbean issues from related departments and programs, as approved by the LALCS program.

  • Introductory Requirement
    • LACS 102: Introduction to Latinx Studies
  • History of the Americas Requirement
    • One course on U.S. or Latin American history. 
      • Pre approved courses: HIST 211; HIST 215; HIST 232; HIST 349; HIST 361; HIST 378; HIST 461W; LACS 101; LACS_OX 101; LACS 363W
  • Languages and Cultures Requirement
    • One course with at least 50% content related to U.S. Latinxs from following programs : SPAN, PORT, DANC, ENG, REL, PHIL, CPLT, FILM, LING, ART, or THEA. At least one course must be 300-level or higher. 
      • Courses already approved: DANC 222R; DANC 228; ENG 278W; ENG 378W; LACS_OX 26; PHIL 114; PHIL 341; SPAN 305; SPAN 341; SPAN 413W; THEA 325
  • Historical and Social Sciences Requirement
    • One course with at least 50% content related to U.S. Latinxs from following programs: SOC, POLS, HIST, AAS, AMST, ECON, PSYC, WGS, or ANTH. At least one course must be 300-level or higher. 
      • Courses already approved: HIST 226; HIST 336; HIST 360; HIST 446; POLS 347; SOC 247
  • Two additional courses with at least 50% content related to U.S. Latinxs that fall into the “Languages and Cultures” or “Historical and Social Sciences” categories as described above.
